Understanding substance use disorders

Learning about substance use disorders offers a new way to understand yourself or someone you care about. Compassion, education, and support are key parts of moving forward. You deserve information that gives you clarity, reduces shame, and opens the door to effective help.

A substance use disorder is a medical condition affecting how the brain works and how a person interacts with drugs, alcohol, or certain behaviors. This condition changes thoughts, emotions, and daily routines.

There is no single cause for substance use disorders. Many factors can play a role, such as family history, mental health, trauma, and environment. Sometimes, substance use begins as a way to manage pain or stress, but it can become a habit that is difficult to change without support. Understanding these influences helps pave the way for real healing.

The importance of seeking help

Asking for help takes courage—and it can change everything. Early support gives you a better chance at long-term wellness and protects your health. At Torch, you will find guidance and respect at every step, whether you are reaching out for the first time or returning for extra support.

Continuing recovery after inpatient treatment for substance use disorders

Partial hospitalization program (PHP)

A PHP offers a structured schedule of groups, therapy, and skill-building during the day. It gives the structure of treatment while providing increasingly more independence as you transition to regular life.

Intensive outpatient program (IOP)

IOP features a structured schedule of group and individual therapy, taking place several days each week. This level of care allows you to live at home or in a sober living environment, maintain daily responsibilities, and still receive comprehensive, ongoing treatment that supports your recovery goals.

Virtual outpatient program (OP)

Outpatient care, which can be attended in-person or virtually, offers ongoing therapy as you continue growing in your recovery. It is more flexible, often fitting around your daily schedule and provides the support you need while living independently.

Support for lasting recovery

Recovery is more sustainable when you feel supported through every chapter, no matter where your journey takes you. Whether you’re just finishing treatment or have been on this path for a while, ongoing support and encouragement help you stay steady and find meaning in each new day. Torch is committed to making sure you always have resources and caring people to turn to as you keep moving forward.

After treatment, our alumni group welcomes you to stay in touch through group events, volunteer opportunities, and social media. Here, you can celebrate victories, find encouragement, and know you’re not alone in the next chapters of your story.

Support groups play an important role in recovery by offering a space where encouragement and understanding are always present. These groups bring together people with similar experiences, helping members stay accountable, receive genuine support, and find practical solutions to everyday challenges. Many people discover strength and stability in ongoing meetings, where every story and voice is valued.

There are also specialized groups for those recovering from specific substances, like Cocaine, Heroin, or Crystal Meth.

When addiction touches a family, everyone deserves care. These organizations give families a place to share, learn, and heal:
